Emotional Support

A birthing woman's emotions can profoundly affect the birth outcome - which in turn can affect her life. Women need to feel free to express all their birth-related feelings. Chapters provide a safe place where people can explore and share their feelings, become aware of birth options, and learn new information. In this supportive environment men and women begin to realize they are not alone. The staff and volunteers respond to inquiries with information compiled from up-to-date books, medical journals, and other childbirth resources. Women are then networked through our own computer listings, to chapters, supporters, or other information sources in their area for support and local information.

Monthly Support Group
The Portland ICAN chapter hosts a monthly support group open to the public. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. Please email for further information and location. Each meeting explores a relevant topic with discussion and sometimes guest speakers. The support group provides an atmosphere where women can safely explore their feelings surrounding their birth experiences. It is an opportunity to share birth stories, ask questions, explore birth options and gain support.
Note: Babies in arms are welcome at meetings. (Please check before bringing older children or partners along, as subject matter can get intensely personal at times.)

Portland ICAN also offers CBAC (Cesarean Birth After Cesarean) suppot meetings. At this point the meetings are held on an as-needed basis. Please stay tuned for more information about our next meeting.
